It's That Time of Year

Writer: leesilberleesilber

It's commencement speech season which means there is something we can all learn from when we are asked to get up and speak, no matter where that is. The best commencement speeches all have something in common, they are short, structured, and have a memorable takeaway. Here's some examples.

  • "You are not a slacker if you cut yourself some slack. I've realized there is more to life than work." —BILL GATES

  • "If you want to change the world, start by making your bed." —ADMIRAL McRAVEN

  • "For every winner there doesn't have to be a loser. In fact, most success stories are less about competition and more about collaboration." —MICHELLE YEOH

  • "Being different is your edge—your ultimate competitive advantage. No one can compete with you at being you." —STEVE JOBS

  • "At no time did I ever feel out of place, or not enough, or inadequate—an imposter—because I knew who I am." —OPRAH WINFREY

I know we hope, imagine, expect people will hang on our every word and that more is more, but the truth is less is more and if you can grab them with one really good idea they'll remember and repeat we're doing our job as a speaker.

I started a new business (Sidekick) to help people craft speeches that connect, deliver them with poise and passion, and leave the audience wanting more. I'm here if you need me.
