I believe we teach what we need to learn and if you advise others, you need to walk the talk. Which is why when I was asked to speak about the power of optimism I turned to the most optimistic person I’ve ever known, Barbara “Sunshine” Blake. Years ago Sunshine asked me to write a book about her incredible life after she learned she was dying from lung cancer. Sunshine won awards and was a surprise hit. It also changed my life. I use the lessons she taught me every single day.
For my speech I pulled from my own book (and The Energy Bus) and what follows are the seven secrets for a happier life Sunshine taught me. Keep in mind, every bad thing that could happen to a person happened to Sunshine (sometimes more than once) and yet she remained upbeat and optimistic.
Everything Happens For a ReasonLook for the silver lining. Instead of blaming and complaining, understand that in the end what seems like a bad thing may be the best thing in disguise. The Universe Provides us With Endless Opportunities Saying yes and acting on opportunities presented to us (and our ideas) is vital.
You Do You
Know what makes you happy and don’t let others tell you what that is. Live an authentic life that is true to you.
There is Plenty to Go Around
A mindset of abundance is better than one of scarcity. We can have it all and it doesn’t mean someone else will have less.
It Takes No More Time or Energy to Think Positive
Negative people see obstacles. Positive people see opportunities.
Own It
Instead of blaming others or circumstances for our failures, take ownership of it. You are not a victim unless you act like one.
