You Can't Explain It

Fate. Kizmet. Destiny. Sometimes things happen and we have to admit there is something greater than us at work. I have a perfect example. I was speaking at the SHRM conference in San Diego. There were over 20,000 attendees. The venue was h-u-g-e. I spoke at the end of the first day to an audience of 200 people in one of the breakout sessions. That's the setup.
At the end of my speech quite a few people came up to say nice things. Ahhhhh. One had a question, so she waited until everyone else left. By the time it was her turn I'd ran out of books. She asked her question, I answered it, and I asked for a card. I told her I would send a book in the mail the next day. She was thrilled.
She handed me her card. She worked for a big credit union. Whoa. The book I was giving out was, "The Credit Union Way". Perfect. I set her card down and began cleaning up. Somehow, it must have inadvertently been thrown away. I was distraught. I tried to remember her name and where she worked to look her up.
Ha, I found her on LinkedIn and mailed the book I promised. Then, the next day I went back to the conference to thank all the AV people who helped me (long story). I somehow got lost and passed someone who looked like the person whose card I lost. I spun around and lo and behold, it WAS her. What are the chances?
I happened to have a book in my backpack and I gave it to her as a bonus. We laughed about the whole affair and agreed, it was meant for us to somehow team up in the future. The odds of us being at the same place, at the same time, in such a huge venue are 20,000 to 1. When things like this happen, I believe there is a force that wants to help us.
